For all those Hoosiers who've complained about Bilerico going national and wanted more local coverage of politics from a queer perspective, I'm happy to announce the launch of Bilerico-Indiana. We'll be focused on local and state-wide issues just like the Bilerico of old. We're currently recruiting new bloggers that aren't on the Project as well as shifting some of our local bloggers over to B-I.
To launch the new site, we're featuring an interview with Mary Ann Sullivan, the democrat who looks poised to take over Jon Elrod's seat in the Statehouse. No Republican has filed to run and she is unopposed in the primary.
What'll shock you? She's in favor of same-sex marriage and is willing to champion most LGBT causes at the Statehouse - civil rights, school bullying, and more!
In a brief story appearing in the IBJ Daily this afternoon it was announced that Indianapolis City Market Executive Director Nikki Longworth is no longer in charge of the century old city landmark:
Nikki Longworth no longer is executive director of Indianapolis City Market. Her departure ends a sometimes-controversial six-year tenure.
A market employee confirmed the departure. Additional information was not immediately available.
The market is in the midst of a $1.8 million renovation that is running behind schedule.
The departure was just announced to the media today; however, Monticello has learned that tenants said that she abruptly left as of May 11, nearly 10 days ago. This comes on the heels of her last media appearance on May 2nd, in a story WISH TV ran about the Farmer's Market opening day and the ongoing delays with the renovations to the historic marketplace across from the site of the former Market Square Arena and City-County Building.
The case of Terry J. Record keeps taking on new layers of embarassment for the Marion County Prosecutor's office. Record, an attorney for the state Department of Health, is a former intern, campaign aide and deputy prosecutor for Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi. The 26 year old attorney has been implicated in two previous alcohol-related incidents which have been uncovered by local media since the Sunday night crash in which 47 year old Jimmy Cash was killed by Record when he ran a red light on Southeastern Avenue on his way home from Brad's Brass Flamingo.
Gary Welsh at Advance Indiana has been alloverthis story:
Let's face it, Indianapolis police and the Marion County prosecutor's office let Jimmy Cash's family down in a big way. Record's admission he lied about the hit-and-run accident last October was tanatmount to a plea for help. If Record had been charged and the State Board of Law Examiners notified of his transgression, Record would have been immediately placed in an alcohol rehabilitation plan if he had any hope of ever practicing law. Instead, Record was able to walk away from his crime, be admitted as an attorney just weeks later on October 20, 2006, and be free to drive his automobile. The failure of our police and prosecutor to do their job in this case is inexcusable.
I will be conducting an experiment next month here at Blue Indiana which I am excited to tell you all about. Meet the Bloggers will premier live on Blue Indiana at 12 noon on June 3rd and will have a 4 week experimental run. This will be a live streaming audio talk show with a similar format to Meet the Press in which I will host bloggers, politicians and other newsworthy figures in discussion of hot topics of the week and other issues of interest to listeners.
The show will begin with an overview of the week's headlines, followed by a prerecorded interview with a notable person of interest, possibly a politician, a journalist or other figure. Following the interview, I will lead a roundtable discussion with a panel of two bloggers each week and a round of questions from our audience who will be able to call in to the show and discuss topics with our panel. The whole thing will be recorded to an mp3 file for sharing and posted as a podcast after the show in the iTunes Podcasts store for downloading.
Blog Talk Radio provides a free service which allows hosts like me to produce live streaming audio shows using a telephone based production system. Once you register with them to have your own channel on the BTR website, you are given two distinct phone numbers which allow the host and either guests or audience members who wish to call in to the host can use to connect to the BTR system. The guest/audience number allows you to connect up to 5 callers at a time to the system to hold group discussions with the host which are then streamed live via the BTR site's channel page for the show. A Flash media player on that page allows listeners to listen to your live show and the player can be placed on the host's website as an embedable player as well.
I'm looking forward to conducting this experimental run of 4 shows in June from the Blue Indiana site. Nothing like this has ever been done in Indiana so I feel like we'll be breaking new ground with this show. It will also be nice to get bloggers, politicians and other news figures together to discuss issues facing our state and nation in a forum such as this. If you are a blogger, politician, business leader, activist or other person interested in participating in this experiment as a panelist let me know and I'd be happy to accomodate you. I'll have specific guest details and more information about the experimental run in the next couple of weeks and will post more on this soon.
