Donkey Girl is home from school due to a snow day (and I'll just sayin' this is getting ridiculous), so she's got lots of time to speculate on Bayh's last minute announcement that he'll not run for re-election. Here are the questions I've come up with so far:
- What the What?!
- Palin/Bayh 2012? (I predicted a TV show for Palin, so I'm 1 for 1. Let's see if this one makes it 2 for 2...)
- If no one offers themselves up willingly can the party just draft someone?
-What if no one files by the 19th? (Ye Gads!!!)
- I have repeatedly complained that Bayh decided things by wetting a finger to see what way the wind is blowing. So which way is the wind blowing here?
- If Bayh ever decides to run for anything else, will any of us ever vote for him again?
At least it has made being stuck at home interesting (but not in a good way really) ~DG
Ok, it is New Year's Eve, and this long-time political junkie will take a stab at looking into the crystal ball for 2010. Nothing deep, just a few more-or-less educated guesses.
1. Evan Bayh will win in a cakewalk. He is the most conservative Democrat in the Senate. That actually makes him somewhat unpopular in the progressive/ liberal wing of the Democrat Party, but he is a heck of a lot better than some of the wackos mentioned to run against him.
2. Dan Burton will win the primary (IN-5) by a whisker, and lose in the general election, to GASP, a Democrat, a Dr. Nasser Hanna, a cancer doc at IU Med Center. Watch out for this one, possible 3-way race with Burton, Hanna, and a teabagger. I wish the republicans would replace Burton, but he will tear his party apart instead. Dr. Hanna is a well-spoken political novice, so his first real test is to see how well he does fundraising.
3. Secretary of State race will be between two Hamilton County residents, Republican Charlie White and Democrat Tom McKenna. This one is REAL important to both parties.
4. Demos will keep control of the State House of Reps, and Reps the Senate. No news there. Redistricting will be a war, winner is whoever wins Sec of State.
Evan Bayh's wife, Susan, "owns from $500,001 to $1 million in employee stock in WellPoint, the Indianapolis-based insurance giant on whose board she sits." That would mean that the value of her personal holdings in that one health insurance company alone, in the last six weeks alone (since [Senator Joseph] Lieberman and her husband began menacing the public option), would have increased by a value of between $125,000 and $250,000. As part of the bonanza of health care industry board positions she magically received since her husband became a Senator, Susan Bayh is given a quarter-million dollars each year in stocks and stock options from Wellpoint. That's just a microcosm for considering how well Obama's so-called "special interests" have done as a result of this health care bill.
Senator Evan Bayh has his own channel on YouTube, who knew. The lead video is of an interview of the Senator on Fox News talking about health care reform vis-a-vis the deficit.
(Bumped from the user diaries. I know we've been down this road before, but I'm curious what you all think. - promoted by Thomas)
It looks like Senator Evan Bayh might not be through with presidential politics quite yet. Following an endorsement made two weeks ago in support of fellow Senator Hillary Clinton, Bayh will be returning to Iowa to campaign on her behalf. Once marked as a potential darkhorse in the 08' Presidential race, Bayh has spent considerable time in Iowa where he was able to build a sizable support base.
"We're thrilled to have him coming out here," said Mark Daley, a spokesman for Clinton in Iowa. "He's spent a significant amount of time out here last year. He made some great friends and we hope that he can connect with them and share his personal connections with Sen. Clinton and why he believes she's the candidate of strength and experience to create the change we need in America."
Many political insiders have tipped Bayh as a potential vice-presidential candidate. They point to his overwhelming support in a solidly republican Indiana, and the advantages this creates for a general election democratic ticket. Personally I would love to see Bayh in this role, and moreover be able to use it as a stepping stone for the presidency nine years from now.
