Evan Bayh votes WITH David Vitter (Sen-LA) on ACORN Amendment

by: Daily Activist

Sat Feb 07, 2009 at 17:20:15 PM EST

I've never been a huge fan of Senator Bayh, though my esteem for him had improved somewhat during the Presidential campaign. I know that many think he's the best we can do in Indiana, and that may be true, but he's back in the "BIG disappointment" category for me.

David "It's Okay to Sleep with Prostitutes if You're Straight and a Republican" Vitter, Senator from Louisiana, proposed an amendment to the stimulus package banning any funds from that package going to ACORN. This, despite the fact that ACORN was not going to receive any funds from the stimulus package anyway and helped to rehabilitate approximately 3500 homes in Vitter's home state after hurricane Katrina.

Who voted for the amendment?  Why, our supposedly Democratic Senator from Indiana, Evan Bayh.

Fortunately, the amendment failed.  However, this vote is part of what I consider to be a disturbing trend by Senator Bayh.  According to this chart from Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight.com, Bayh is the second worst Democrat when it comes to voting with President Obama.  The only Democrat with a a worse voting record?  Joe Lieberman.  Even worse, there is a Republican who has a better record - Susan Collins.

Senator Bayh needs to be reminded that Indiana voted for President Obama and start supporting his agenda instead of taking pot shots at honorable service organizations.

Todd Rokita begins bizarre crusade against ACORN

by: Thomas

Mon Oct 27, 2008 at 14:19:50 PM EDT

Am I the only one who sees the glaring logical problem with the following assessment of voter registration problems in Lake County?
Lake County election officials have alleged, and Acorn officials confirmed, that the organization submitted hundreds of potentially bad voter registration applications earlier this month.

Acorn officials contend they are required by law to submit all applications it collects, and a spokesman said they made efforts to call attention to applications that appeared to be problematic. The official said Acorn was the victim of unscrupulous employees and the organization fired at least five of those involved with the Lake County drive.

Rokita's letter, however, states that "complying with the law to submit legitimate applications does not allow Acorn officials to evade the law against knowingly submitting fraudulent applications."

In other words, ACORN was required to turn in every application, and therefore should be held criminally responsible for turning in every application.

Clear as mud, eh?

It seems to me that ACORN had some bad employees who committed some highly unethical acts. If ACORN is telling the truth about flagging these applications -- and there hasn't been any substantial evidence to the contrary -- then they are being accused of a crime for following the law.

That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Unless, of course, this is nothing more than a political ploy to stoke the deep-seeded fear of Lake County and renew the fundamentally false connection between the Democratic ticket and a troubled community organizing organization. But Todd Rokita wouldn't do that, would he?

You Know What Destroys the Fabric of America? I'll Tell you!

by: Lalita

There were many things that John McCain said (when I wasn't distracted by his eye-rolling, teeth-sucking and huffing) that I found disturbing during last night's debate. One was his assertion that ACORN, one of those worthless "community organizing groups," was on the road to "destroying the fabric of democracy" because of the few voter registration errors that were discovered--many of which may have simply been spoofed information provided by fun-loving people the good folks at ACORN interacted with or typographical errors.
