Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman André Carson announced that he has secured more than $3 million for Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), which will be used to provide much-needed research and development services to the Department of Defense.

The funding was approved as part of the Fiscal Year 2010 Department of Defense Appropriations Act, which passed the House this week.

"Our men and women in uniform are fighting everyday to defend our nation, and we have a responsibility to provide them with all of the resources and tools they need to safely do their jobs. Thanks to these appropriations, some of these life-saving studies will take place right here in the 7th District.

"Nearly $3.7 million will fund cutting-edge research at IUPUI focused on improving technology and advancing efforts to better prepare our troops and keep them safe during combat. For example, the outcomes of this work could lead to improvements in the way we treat battlefield wounds or major breakthroughs in how we more efficiently and effectively power military equipment in the theater of war.

"As these funds reach our local campus, I look forward to seeing the full knowledge of expertise of our students and professors put to work solving some of the most complex issues facing our military.  I am confident that the result will be improved safety and security for our brave men and women serving overseas."

More Information on IUPUI's Department of Defense projects:

$1 Million - IUPUI to Research Regenerative Medicine for Battlefield Injuries

Funds research on biological species that can be used to regenerate bone and muscle damaged in some of the most common forms of battlefield injuries:  injuries to the extremities and craniofacial region.  If successful, this research could potentially help many injured soldiers live a better quality of life after recovering from their injuries.

$1.2 Million - IUPUI to Research Advanced Power Sources for Future Soldiers

Project will assist the Army Research Lab in the development of a reliable and safe lightweight renewable power source.  This power source will enable military personnel to better maintain full use of their equipment while in the field and allow them to more easily transport reliable power sources.

$1.5 Million - Lithium-ion Battery Safety Detection and Control of Impending Failures

Research will assist the United States Navy in developing new lithium-ion battery technology for its submarine fleet.  This project will help the Navy meet the requirement to use lithium-ion batteries, a more energy-efficient option than the battery technology currently in use. By improving the safe use of these batteries in large-scale deployments, lithium-ion batteries will be able to power a greater percentage of U.S submarines.
