The Bureau of Motor Vehicles today will unveil four possible designs for the state's new standard plate, which will gradually be put into circulation next year.
As they did in 2002, state officials will choose the plate that proves the most popular with the public.
Starting Tuesday, Hoosiers can vote for their favorite design on the BMV's Web site (www.in.gov/bmv), at license branches or at public libraries. The vote will last through April 18.
Results will be released in May.
All four proposals are built around the state's flag.
Two designs include close-ups of the blue-and-yellow flag fluttering in the background. A third features the state flag set in white against a simple blue backdrop. The fourth includes both the flag and the state seal.
In addition to carrying the "Indiana" name and an alpha-numeric plate number, the new plates will, for the first time, show the name of the county in which the vehicle is registered.
To make room for county names, the BMV ditched the address of the state's Web site, which is on the bottom of the current plate.
