Send David Orentlicher to Congress

by: Vox Populi

Fri Apr 18, 2008 at 00:37:13 AM EDT

Earlier this week, State Representative David Orentlicher, one of the four serious competitors for the May 6th Democratic Primary, launched his first campaign advertisement.  The spot is humorous, and introduces us to the candidate with the funny-sounding last name.  See it below:

Vox Populi :: Send David Orentlicher to Congress
The video has over 1,100 views on YouTube so far, and Dr. Orentlicher is shown as a good neighbor and a strong family man.  I've had interactions with both David and his wife Judy, and there is so much love and care in that family.  David is also one of the most dedicated public servants in the state of Indiana, and has always spent weekends walking his district to meet voters and stay in touch with the issues.

Being in touch is why Dr. Orentlicher was the first legislator to recognize the property tax crisis.  He developed a comprehensive plan to deal with the situation and was the first to hold town hall meetings with constituents.  David was named as Indiana's "Best Legislator" by NUVO newsweekly last year, in part for his dedication to resolving the property tax issue, but also for his work fighting for abortion rights and his support for Indiana's gay and lesbian community.

Today, Dr. Orentlicher released his second ad of the primary campaign.  The ad highlights the real need to reform the health care system, and attacks the lobbyists and special interest groups who have successfully fought to kill health care reform.

Dr. Orentlicher highlights his commitment health care reform as a legislator, and reminds us that he is the only candidate in the race refusing to take lobbyist and special interest money.  As a physician, David Orentlicher is superbly qualified to tackle the issue of health care reform in Congress.  As a state legislator, he brings the experience and commitment to get things done.  And as a Congressman, he will never put special interest groups and Washington lobbyists ahead of his constituents.

David Orentlicher will be a wonderful member of Congress, and I wholeheartedly endorse him.

I have a problem with one. (4.00 / 1)
The only one I find completely unacceptable is Carolene Mays, who voted for the Republican anti-gay marriage amendment and has a spotty record on reproductive rights.

I'm also no fan of Andre Carson, but if we get stuck with him we get stuck with him.

Dr. Myers and Dr. Orentlicher are both good, strong choices in my book.

I think she's conservative in other areas as well.  She's way too conservative for our district.  Definitely the worst choice!

what? (4.00 / 1)
she really voted in favor of that gay marriage amendment? Ok I don't like her at all now. I can't find any real information on her anyways. She needs to stop trying.

Yep. (4.00 / 1)
She pretty much admitted that her religious views guided her vote.  But here's what Dr. Orentlicher had to say after he voted against the amendment:

"Today will go down as a day of shame in the history of the General Assembly," said Rep. David Orentlicher, D-Indianapolis. The public, he said, may not remember other bills lawmakers pass this year. But, he said, "they will not forget we wrote second-class citizenship for gays and lesbians into the constitution."

Even if he doesn't win, I'll take comfort in knowing I voted for the best.

Does anyone know... (0.00 / 0)
What is his opinion on Zionism and U.S. support of Israel?

What's Andre's opinion on Wahabism and U.S. support for of the Saudi government?

Does anyone know how either of them feel about Montana? I've never trusted the state, and if they aren't willing to take a stand on those cow-herding ne'er-do-wells, I'm not sure they can get my support.

I feel the same way about Maine.

What about... (0.00 / 0)
How do they feel about Hannah Montana? She is a very popular girl among the "tween" set and I feel this is a constituency that needs represented.

If you don't think that the Democratic party is too behold to AIPAC, then you're not paying attention.

Do you ask this question of any other candidate? (0.00 / 0)
if not, why not?

No! Just the Jews (0.00 / 0)
Are you kidding?  Of course I do; Zionism is a secular movement, albeit one with a foundation in religion.  Shortly after the special election, Woody Myers' son had a diary on this site in which we were encouraged to ask questions about the candidate.  Myers' view on U.S. support of Israel was something I asked about, among other questions.  Myers' son, though, never came back to answer them, so I'm still waiting.  Looks like I'll still be waiting on Orentlicher's position too.

Not that I'm not firmly in the Carson camp, but it's never a bad idea to have a Plan B.

I think you'd have better luck asking the campaigns directly -- (0.00 / 0)
I don't blame them for not answering questions here necessarily.

I will say that both Dr. Myers and David O. have run very net-friendly campaigns. They have always been there with a quick answer when I needed it.

Obama's campaign has been the biggest disappointment. Two requests for comment put in now, and both times some guy told me that they would "call me right back."

I'm still waiting.
