Senator Patricia Miller (317) 232-9400 (800) 382-9467 S32@in.gov http://www.in.gov/S32/
HCHP suggests contating Senator Miller's office, and also contacting your own Senator to encourage them to support this bill. You can see the email I sent to Senator Miller after the jump...
My Senator, Vi Simpson, has introduced SB 218. Recent studies have shown that "privatized" Medicare providers operate at a significantly higher overhead than the regular Medicare program. In order to reduce health care costs, it is imperative that we study the factors that allow single-payer systems like Medicare to provide service at such a lower cost.
In the last elections, those elected officials who failed to recognize the economic hardship imposed by property taxes paid a high political cost. With Senator Simpson's bill, we have a chance to avoid that kind of crisis situation in health care costs.
As Chair of the Health and Provider Services Committee, you have the unique opportunity to show real leadership on this issue. I encourage you to schedule SB 218 for a hearing.
As you can see, I highlighted some of Senator Miller's own language about the property tax "crisis" in my letter. If property taxes are a "crisis", then what does that make the current health care situation in Indiana? Some studies (PDF) have shown that one half of bankruptcies in the US are caused by medical bills.
Our representatives at the state and national level should know that the same electoral anger over property taxes is simmering under a mountain of medical bills.
