Indiana's dirty little secret: 3rd in nation for CO2 emissions

A tip o' the hat to the South Shore Progressive blog for pointing me to this interesting new site called CARMA -- Carbon Monitoring for Action. As the SSP notes, Indiana ranks third in the country in total carbon dioxide emissions, and has two of the top twelve polluting power plants.

(See that red dot in our state? That's not a good thing.)

This is probably an appropriate time to remind everyone that a national climate registry was formed that allows states to voluntarily track their carbon emissions. The idea is that this will create a good, uniform model by which pollution can be monitored across the country.

Guess who has refused to join?

The Climate Registry, announced yesterday, establishes methods to track, verify and report heat-trapping gases accurately from state to state, its organizers said.

"You can't manage what you don't measure," said Art Williams, Louisville's air-quality chief who helped develop the registry through his work with the National Association of Clean Air Agencies.

The states that don't participate could be putting their businesses at a disadvantage, Williams said. For instance, they may not be able to earn compensation for certain pollution cuts under future voluntary or mandatory global warming initiatives, he said.

Indiana state government offices were closed yesterday, and representatives of Gov. Mitch Daniels and Indiana environmental regulators did not return pages or messages.

You can read more about the Climate Registry here.

A lot of these businesses will join on their own (4.00 / 2)
BP has indicated that they might do carbon trading on their own.  But they would prefer that there be a national registry, so that they're not at a disadvantage relative to other refiners.

A lot of the big corps prefer the cap and trade system, if they must do something about CO2 emissions.

BP's proposed expansion is going to be a major source of new CO2 emissions, as well as water pollution.  That Canadian Tar Sands Crude needs a lot of heating to process, a lot more than the light crude that they used to process.

I just don't understand... (4.00 / 1)
...how the Governor doesn't look at the rate of cancer and other diseases in the southwestern portion of the state and realize that the best interests of the state -- and more importantly his constituency -- can best be protected by taking the most basic of steps to adequately study the pollution produced in this state.

I don't blame the companies as much for dragging their feet, because they are beholden to the bottom line by their very nature. I do blame our politicians, who are (supposedly) serving the people.

As a matter of human decency... (0.00 / 0)
...I DO expect companies to put the interests of their customers over the bottom line.
