Mike Sodrel: I'm a simple, simple man

by: Thomas

Sat Aug 22, 2009 at 08:06:45 AM EDT

This week's Howey Political Report included an extensive pat on the back analytical look at the potential re-re-re-re-re-candidacy of a certain mustachioed trucking magnate from southern Indiana. Kudos to Howey for the scoop:
Former Fort Wayne Councilman Tom Hayhurst filed paperwork with the FEC to challenge U.S. Rep. Mark Souder in the 3rd CD. And former 9th CD congressman Mike Sodrel told HPI that he is weighing a fifth run against U.S. Rep. Baron Hill. And in the crowded 5th CD field, 2008 nominee John McGoff is one of four challengers to U.S. Rep. Dan Burton.

Sodrel told Howey Politics Indiana on Tuesday that he will decide on whether to challenge Hill after he finishes a book he is writing. That will come sometime this fall.

The book, Sodrel says will be "simple" with "simple words" and "short sentences" and "short paragraphs."

The topic: hashing out the difference between the terms socialist, communist, and capitalist.

Because nothing makes it clear that you want to escape the mantle of the Bush Administration than a return to the simplistic, feeble-minded discussions of yesteryear.

I would like nothing more than to see this guy in the race. Oh please, please.

I'd heard that Young's fundraising was a little anemic, to say the least, but hasn't every GOP office holder in the state already endorsed him in IN-9? If Sodrel decides to get into the race, I wonder how that shakes out...

I think there is one word to describe that situation... (4.00 / 1)
Awkward.  They have to be looking for a fresh face at this point; I can't imagine too many in the establishment think Sodrel can beat Hill.  But he's held the seat and spent a ton of his own money running for it; they can't publicly turn their backs on him.

So somebody important is going to be sent to privately beg one of them to not run; my money is on Sodrel wanting to spend more time on his book.

Sodrel writing a book (4.00 / 2)
I snorted my 7 UP through my nose when I read this...that'll teach me to take a big drink before reading Blue Indiana.

I once spent 15 minutes with Sodrel in the Indy airport, whilst waiting for a flight.  We chatted about families, weather, and, when it shifted to politics, the man went stone-cold monosyllabic.

A complete moron.

So, the book thing?  Not so much.  Pat Buchanan has nothing to fear.  Except that chippy little blond Monica on McLaughlin Group.  (Would someone please kill that witch?)

Sodrel is a modest man... (4.00 / 1)
...with much to be modest about !

Baron Hill (4.00 / 3)
Much has been speculated about Baron Hill running for Governor in 2010, and he is indeed making the rounds.  Rep. Hill is the speaker at the Hamilton County JJ Dinner on Sept. 3, in Carmel if anyone is interested in hearing him speak, and see if you can parse his future.  More information can be found at http://www.hcdemocrats.org/.

As to Sodrel, his single term turned off voters pretty fast, tho he still does have backers among the Radical Right, including our own version of Rush, Greg Garrison.

I've been mildly impressed by Hill lately. (4.00 / 3)
His push back against the right on health care surprised me coming from a so-called Blue Dog and partnering with Andre Carson can only speak well of the man.  It's way early to pledge my support to anyone though I'd be happy to see Hill in the race.

"It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority."  --Benjamin Franklin

Yes, even Democratic authority.
