Marlin Stutzman: Dragons, Dinosaurs, and Dinners, oh my!

by: Thomas

We've been talking lately about the will-he-or-won't-he-speak controversy over Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett's involvement with the Indiana Creation Evidence Expo, which will bring together "scientists" and evangelical Christian activists in the name of sending the public instruction of evolution the way of the dimetrodon.

Now, we have evidence that even if Bennett is a no-show, the wing-nut political constituency will be represented in the room.

That's right, it's everyone's favorite Republican candidate for US Senate, Marlin Stutzman. The presumptive GOP candidate is so gosh-darn excited about the event, he's hosting a dinner with fellow punchline State Rep. Cindy Noe.

Representative Noe is on the education committee in the House, for those who doubt the importance of keeping control of that body next year.

As if the website for this event wasn't enough, a quick look at some of the groups behind the operation reveal all you need to know about the scientific validity of these clowns. Take the Institute for Creation Research, which features a story at the moment entitled "Is there some truth to dragon myths?"

There are other reasons to doubt that dragon legends arose from fossil-based speculations. Tales of dragons are almost universal and were incorporated into the historical background of virtually every people group on every continent.3 How could so many different cultures conjure up such similar details in their dragon legends, unless their ancestors actually encountered them?

It would be easily explained if humans had actually seen living dinosaurs.

Uh...right.

In case you were wondering, another featured story is the incredibly relevant "Energy Bill Won't Solve Global Warming." All amidst a site that purports to fight against "bias" in the scientific process.

There is a huge community of Christian scientists who are more than able to fit their faith within the context of responsible scientific exploration, and then there are these folks.

Just like there is a huge community of politicians who are able to balance their personal beliefs with responsible representation, and then there is Marlin Stutzman.

Evolution (0.00 / 0)
They seem to be dodging the old conservative bug-a-boo, evolution, by dancing very carefully around it.

My own answer to creationists... God created the world... by means of His Law of Evolution. I have yet to get an coherent reply.  That one seems to leave them speechless.

what is more embarassing? (0.00 / 0)
Cindy Noe, or the fact that there are morons in my district (my neighbors) who vote for her?

That... (4.00 / 2)
as much as we laugh about this, attending that event will help Stutzman (and Noe) pick up votes and campaign cash.

[ Parent ]
Cash, yes, but votes? (0.00 / 0)
The folks in that crowd would pretty much vote for anyone with an "R" behind their name.  So I don't see any votes being picked up.  And what cash there is will be split several ways.

Noe beat a very competent, attractive Democratic candidate last time who actually raised money.  But like this crowd, there are those in Hamilton County who will vote Republican for anything with a pulse.

[ Parent ]
There are plenty... (0.00 / 0)
of Rs who vote for Bayh, because "he's not like other Democrats"; even in bad years for Democrats he routinely wins counties by large margins that the rest of the slate will be crushed in.  This gives Stutzman a wedge to cleave some of them away.

I'm not saying Stutzman will win, or even that he'll come within single digits; but in Indiana you dismiss creationist at your own expense.  No matter how wrong they may be, there are far more of them then us in most areas of the state.

the truth (4.00 / 1)
As many on here know, I am irritated with Evan Bayh but this and anything else Stutzman does will not even get him within 10 points of Evan Bayh.

[ Parent ]
When will we ever (4.00 / 2)
get the real word out on Cindy Noe?  Ask around the Statehouse.  Her colleagues don't trust her to push the right voting button--they think she's that stupid.

Which, considering the field, is a pretty startling statement.

Ditto Kathy Richardson (0.00 / 0)
Another not-so-smart Hamilton County Republican who has never sponsored any significant legislation, and who can always be counted on to vote the party line.  What is it about these people anyway?

[ Parent ]
How many dems (0.00 / 0)
can we say the same about?

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
I don't know about Kathy (4.00 / 2)
but Cindy couldn't county to 20 without removing her shoes.

I think most Indiana Republicans fear far-right winguts.  The organized party doesn't campaign for them, until they're elected the first time.  Then it's hands-off til the nutcase decides to retire.  Particularly in that solid Republican belt north of Indy.

Further evidence: Dan Burton, perhaps America's stupidest Congressman.

Cindy Noe (4.00 / 2)
is also a bitter nasty person even tp her constituents in the hallway - watched an encounter between her and a very polite cultured advocate for glbt issues, and Noe went ballistic.  Woulda loved to youtube that encounter!
