With session finally over, eyes already turning to next year

by: Thomas

All of this excitement at the legislature, and we're not even in an election year.

Kind of makes you wonder what next year will be like, eh?

One hint of what's to come can be found in the statements made by Governor Mitch Daniels yesterday, as he seemed to lay the groundwork for a renewed fight over local government reform.

"I hope we make more forward progress next year," he said. "We'll be back with local government reform."

It wasn't clear whether Daniels would back the same proposals he pushed this year, many of which came under intense fire from legislators in both parties.

"We'll have to talk about exactly which aspects, and visit with proponents, visit with adversaries, see if we can find a way to move forward there," he said.

With portions of the Guv's plan consisting of consolidating rural school districts and dismantling traditional local government, it remains to be seen whether Daniels can improve on his horrid track record of marketing these reforms across the state. He faced just as much criticism from the right as anywhere else this year, and winning over rural conservatives may be the biggest hurdle of all.

Mitch may be right (0.00 / 0)
I detest the dismantling of public education, but its time was coming...the neocons are licking their chops now as they begin this difficult and ugly process.  It won't be pretty.

But we need local government reform.  The townships needed to go yesterday.  Only selfish parochial interests kept them live the last two sessions.  Their time will come.  Soon.

budget fight (4.00 / 1)
I found the dispute over a one year budget vs a two year budget silly....the truth of the matter is that the economy is in such a mess and the governor's experts have had revenue projections that were so far off the mark that the budget will have to have some serious tweaking ..thus the budget fight will be revisited.....also by then many cities, counties, school districts will have suffered by underfunding that there will be increased pressure,.....then there is the unsolved  problem of the CIB

One Year vs. Two Year (4.00 / 3)
There is a solid argument to be made, that a one-year budget was actually the more-conservative approach.  You're right--the gov's budget gurus missed the mark 11 months in a row, which is indicative of the depth and seriousness of this recession.  It's unprecedented, thus the economic brains have no comparisons by which to learn.

If we're so uncertain about our tax income, it makes sense to me to draw up a one-year budget and gut-check it next session. Adjustments can be easier in that environment.

When House Dems put the one-year argument on the table, all over Indiana, it was a "shoot the messenger" reaction.   I think it's time to take  serious look at our messenger--a 35-year Ivy tech employee who hasn't drawn a private paycheck in his life.  He's right on most issues, and I prefer him to Bosma as Speaker.

Bauer could've had the best budget idea since sliced bread.  The public has long since stopped listening to him.  Ask around.

Sad but True (4.00 / 2)
The public doesn't like him, but worse they don't respect him (they don't like Mitch either, but some still respect him).  When they do agree with him you hear things like "I hate to quote Pat... or I hate to agree with Pat..."  It's time we put a fresh face on these ideas.

I'm now going to hold my breath while I wait for this to happen.

Visiting relatives, raw fish and some politicians (4.00 / 1)
don't wear too well after a period of time.  You can determine your own boiling point on those categories---but by and reasonable measure, 35 years is too long to hang around.'

Too many of we Democrats are tired of defending him.  He polarizes folks.  Frankly, during this session, he was the perfect foil for Daniels.  Damn it.

And he surrounds himself with folks who are drunk with power.  You might call it arrogant.   Exhibit 1: Dennie Oxley Jr.  There are many more.
