Republican Leadership: Evan Bayh will win in 2010

by: Thomas

Tue Mar 31, 2009 at 13:47:15 PM EDT

Note to all of the local yokel Republicans who are so often discussing their dream of knocking off Sen. Evan Bayh in 2010: Not even your most optimistic national cheerleaders are willing to give you the time of day.
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn of Texas said Bayh looks "pretty good" in 2010 and suggested NRSC will not spend much on the race. "We have a sort of priority list," Cornyn said. "He's down on that." Cornyn praised Bayh's recent stands. "I welcome what he's been trying to do around here," Cornyn said. "What he's doing is constructive."
You can disagree with Evan Bayh's rhetoric, but you can't disagree that a large portion of the state agrees with him. And that large portion will be voting for him next year.

If Cornyn praises you (4.00 / 2)
run for the hills because he's batshit crazy most of the time.  Yesterday, he also declared their would be "World War III" if the Senate tries to seat Minnesota's duly-elected and recounted Sen. Al Franken.

Yeah, I know, Sen. Al Franken usually brings a slight snicker to folks.  But he'll be a much-needed vote, and Cornyn vows to filibuster the seating.  Shades of Bush v. Gore 2000.

It could be that Cornyn's real translation here is: we don't have enough money, and he's got plenty, so leave him alone.

But that's just me...

Or... (0.00 / 0)
Maybe the Republicans are not just afraid of his money and name recognition, but they might wonder why they should expend scarce resources opposing a Democratic Senator who is at least threatening to oppose a popular President of his own party and whose voting record makes him the most Republican of all the Democrats in the US Senate.

Rather similar to the thinking behind the Democrats not fielding any opposition to Dick Lugar last time out, don't you think?

Doubtful (0.00 / 0)
Both parties probably understand how Congress works and the extreme differences between the minority and majority position.  Resources aren't unlimited;  we would have targeted Lugar if we could.

ELLSWORTH FOR SENATE 2010

Is your sig line for real? (4.00 / 2)
He's the most Republican of all Democrats.

I honestly think he'd be one if he hadn't been a legacy candidate.

If Evan Bayh is the best we have,  we're sunk as a State and a nation. Thankfully, I know that's not true.

Evan Bayh posts always evoke a strong response because he's a generation-changing Democrat.

You're too young to remember 16 years of Doc Bowen and Bob Orr.  Like fingernails on a blackboard.  They were in complete control, had the press in the palm of their hands, and rewrote common knowledge on the budget and education.  Using very faulty premises.

Evan came along and won.  Twice.  Easily.  Somuch so that his vote-getting popularity rubbed off on one of Indiana's nicest politicians ever--Frank O'Bannon.  Who couldn't campaign but luckily, out-married himself.

I listened to Sen. Cornyn again yesterday.  He was rattling on about something on MSNBC....and I got the distinct impression he and Dan Burton would be great golf buddies.  Similar mindsets.  Scary.
