Congressman Andre Carson: One year later

by: Thomas

Mon Mar 09, 2009 at 08:03:23 AM EDT

Wilson must have slept in late today, because he hasn't yet plastered the site with references to this morning's Tully column on Congressman Andre Carson reaching one year in office, a mile marker that the Star political writer saw as an opportunity to check in with the 7th District's busy representative.
When Carson returned my phone call from D.C., I asked what he was up to.

"Working, working, working, working," he said.

Then I asked how things were going after a year in Congress.

"Great, great, great, great."

That's Andre Carson.

During his short stint in public office, he's proved himself to be relentlessly positive and seriously hardworking. He's constantly in motion and constantly smiling. He's frustrated his grandmother's fiercest critics by emerging as a solid U.S. representative -- one who has worked hard to expand the base of support he inherited.

The greatest testament to Congressman Carson coming into his own is probably the least easy to notice: Silence.

As in, you haven't heard a substantial peep out of anyone concerning a 2010 primary challenge.

Yon won't hear anyone, either (4.00 / 2)
A primary challenge?  Are you serious?

Andrew has done remarkable back-bench work.  He is to be commended.

hardworker (0.00 / 0)
Andre is a hard worker and in touch with his district....if a Wellpoint doctor from California lost to him by almost a 2 to 1 margin in the primary while spending $3 million dollars of his own money,  there will be no challenge unless there is a major screwup...[which would shock me].   Carson is starting to get some national attention and is on good terms with Obama......

Actually... (0.00 / 0)
Dr. Myers spent just a bit over $2 Million of his own cash.  Just thought the facts may matter.

For the primary,  Myers spent $2,323,412  which I concede is not qyute $3 million but I think qualifies as more than a "tad bit"   I will split the difference with you.   Carson received 66,659 votes to Myers 33,683

Wrong again, Howard. (0.00 / 0)
Myers raised almost $200k from individuals and PACS in addition to the $2.1 million he self-contributed.  Learn to read charts and graphs.

You have a short memory.  I wasn't supporting Dr. Myers, and yes, all of Congressman Carson's opponents lost big.  But that doesn't have squat to do with you being loose with your facts.

4 Primary Challengers (4.00 / 1)
Actually it's highly likely Congressman Carson will have several challengers in the Democratic Primary. In the very-contested 2008 Primary there were a total of eight candidates but only 4 of which were considered "serious". It's the "non-serious" folk who will run against André.

Congresslady Carson always had a few people run against her in the primaries - André will too. Some of Julia's challengers didn't even live near Indianapolis: any citizen of the State can run in any Congressional District race. It costs nothing to file and there are no multiple-signature petitioning requirements.

Indiana's 7th CD is Democratic-leaning -- Congressman Carson is fully aware that any serious challenge for the Congressional seat would thus have to come from the Democratic fold. In addition to hard work for his constituents of all political persuasions, he maintains strong relationships with the Democratic Party grassroots and leaders. He was the popular featured speaker at last Saturday's Marion County Democratic Party Convention.

My favorite moment... (0.00 / 0)
...was personally the Good Congressman entering last year's state convention to Kanye West.

As the one who put together the music, it was fun to have him actually choose his song.

That being said, getting to personally select the theme from Shaft for Pat Bauer was also kind of nice...

Thomas, you have a wicked sense of humor! Keep it up...

Quit complaining about the 7th... (0.00 / 0)
It's a solid D seat, unless the congressman screws up very badly.  I would prefer that some of the Demo wannabes move a little north and take on Dan "The Sleaze" Burton and give us something to fight with, other than hope that a Republican will take him out.

I did hear a HINT that Bart Peterson, who does live in the 5th, and who knows a couple of things about campaigning, might consider running in the 5th.  I LIKE that idea, quite a bit.  Anyone else agree?  Or not?

Crazy... (4.00 / 1)
The 5th is the most Republican district in the state, and to even be competitive Peterson would have to win areas of Marion County he lost in the 2007 election.  Not gonna happen.

uuhhh (0.00 / 0)
Do you mean the same Bart Peterson who spent $2,000,000 as an incumbent in a Democratic city and lost to a republican with very little money and no support from the city, county or state republican party?

[ Parent ]
Yep, THAT Bart Peterson (0.00 / 0)
Mary Etta Ruley got 35% in the 5th with no money at all, and Burton almost lost his primary, so with money and organization, a Democrat might have a shot.

And part of the reason Bart lost is that Mitch dumped all of the property tax mess in Bart's lap, when it was more properly Mitch's mess in the first place.  I suspect that a bunch of people who voted for Ballard would do it differently this time.

Keep in mind, Burton LOST Marion and Hamilton Counties in the last primary, even with tons of Republican cross-overs voting in the Democrat primary.  There are a LOT of people of both parties around central Indiana ready to Dump Dan.

[ Parent ]
I agree [partially] (0.00 / 0)
Burton did lose Marion and Hamilton Counties in the primary and lost big time.....I estimate that 50,000 to 75,000 republicans switched over to vote Demo in those two counties and Burton was losing 2/3 of that vote.....the rest of the district Burton won bigtime...someone has to convince the rest of the district what a sleazeball Burton is.....and the repub voters will return to the GOP primary in 2010...but I still dont see how any Demo does much better than the 35% which was in a very strong Demo year.

...is easily my favorite Indiana politician.  Too bad I live in Pence's district.  :(
