SUSA: McCain holds on to slight lead in Indiana

by: Thomas

Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 22:49:12 PM EDT

It had been a while since SurveyUSA checked in with some poll numbers, and I was beginning to think they had forgotten about us. Not so, says Daily Activist, and thus I will dutifully report the word from the front.
    SurveyUSA
    645 Likely Voters
    8/16-18 -- MoE +/- 3.9%

    50% - John McCain
    44% - Barack Obama
    6% - Undecided/Other
Those who support John McCain -- or, as we've seen, have an irrational hatred of Barack Obama -- will point to these numbers as a sign that the Republicans will hold on to the Hoosier State in November. While that could end up being true, it's important to keep in mind a few things.
    1) The fact that Indiana is competitive at all is a sign of the strong infrastructure Obama's campaign has built across the country.
    2) Obama is about to get a big (read: BIG) boost from his running mate selection and the Democratic National Convention.
    3) As much as I am a fan of SUSA, it's critical to keep in mind that this year, turnout will be unlike anything we've seen on the Democratic side. I'm willing to bet that Obama will enjoy a 2-3% boost from his GOTV efforts, and that won't likely show on these early surveys.

McCain over Obama in Hoosier State (4.00 / 1)
Thomas, I think you are right that Barack Obama will gain next week from the convention and the Veep selection.  The press has been severely diminished due to Olympic coverage the last two weeks.

He will get more of a bump than McCain from his convention, so at the end of the day we'll be right back at dead even going into the last 50 days.  For those of us that like politics this is big fun.

I'm sorry. Close races are not fun. (0.00 / 0)
Blowout races - those are fun.  ;)  Close races are scary, stressful and raise my blood pressure.

"It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority."  --Benjamin Franklin

Yes, even Democratic authority.

Let me ammend that slightly. (0.00 / 0)

Not much to worry about... (0.00 / 0)
The last month has been awful for Obama.  The fight over drilling and McCain's "kitchen sink" campaign will be over after the conventions, when Obama will have significantly more resources to spend than McCain.

Plus if Evan Bayh is selected in Indiana Obama will win the state.

Hoosier Progressive

return (4.00 / 1)
The momentum will return and so will the lead in Indiana but we do have to work hard.
