Tony Zirkle: 5,958 Hoosiers can't be wrong

by: BrianK

Wed May 07, 2008 at 17:05:28 PM EDT

(Bumped from the user diaries. 17% of Republicans in the 2nd District are cool with Nazis and the return of segregation. Surprising, or not? - promoted by Thomas)

According to the Indianapolis Star's Election Tracker page, Congressional candidate Tony Zirkle (R-Hitler) managed to find almost 6,000 Indiana Republicans who think that he not only belongs in their party, but that he belongs in the US House of Representatives.

In fact, in Howard County, Zirkle received more votes than Luke Puckett.

I don't even know how to comment on this.

Maybe its my cynicism... (4.00 / 2)
but this makes sense if you have ever visited Kokomo. This is what happens when an area as economically depressed as Kokomo is left to rot by our leadership. Fascism is always on the march in this nation, a fact often overlooked, even by my fellow Democrats who think "that could never happen here".

Oh really? Did you know that Hitler modeled his concentration camps on the United States Government policy of maintaining the reservation system for Native Americans? A system in place to this day. And look at our policies regarding civil liberties, wiretapping, Guantanomo Bay, the CIA rendition program and an endless list of daily fascism our government practices. These programs are openly supported by Republicans, especially in the ultra conservative 2nd district.

It's all about solutions (4.00 / 1)
When the only solution offered is to blame a group of "outsiders", it's not hard to see why some people would choose to believe that.

I feel compelled to add that I don't mean this condescendingly - everyone is vulnerable to this kind of thinking. That's why we need to keep our focus on offering real solutions.

At least he didn't win... (2.00 / 1)
In 1998 Democrats nominated a gay, cross-dressing former felon to run against Dan Burton.  At least the Republicans had the sense to not nominate Zirkle.

This is twice now in two days he has been brought up in conversation. My friend Jacob Perry (Circle City Pundit) was at our campaign's party last night and we got to talking about the Dan Burton race and his name came up. I actually knew BKH before he ran for office and couldn't believe it when he ran.

BKH used to be a regular at Sports Live when I was the assistant entertainment director there. Sports Live was a huge nightclub complex downtown where the Tiki Bob's and Have A Nice Day bars are currently on S. Meridian Street. He used to come in all done up and would cause all kinds of crap and we always had to ask him to leave. I think he even got arrested once for refusing to leave so our door cop arrested him for public intoxication or something.

I don't know anything about this person other than how you describe him above... (0.00 / 0)
...but I really cringe thinking that you're comparing being a gay cross-dresser with being a neo-nazi.

The felony would give me pause, depending on its nature and the length of time it had been since the offense, however.

Yes, even Democratic authority.

Bobby & bounced checks (4.00 / 1)
Bob had done time for bad checks and just in the last year or so, he was back at those tricks again -- He was arrested for more bad checks - I don't recall hearing about conviction though.

The poor guy has a tenuous grasp on reality -- he is also notorious for calling entities and posing as a celebrity philanthropist willing to assist the organization.

So which would be worse? (0.00 / 0)
Bad drag or someone willing to claim Hitler fame?

lol (4.00 / 1)
If you knew him, or at least encountered him before, you would know what I mean.  Do I think cross-dressing gays are worse than or equal to neo-nazis?  Of course not.  But in Indiana, or most places for that matter, they stand an equal chance of getting elected.

When you add in that his cross-dressing included impersonating the female judge who sentenced him for multiple check fraud, it gets even more interesting.

Wow. Just...wow! BKH is certainly one of the most interesting characters in Indiana politics.

Zirkle's Concession Statement (4.00 / 1)
I just want to preserve this for posterity. You can find it, along with other delusional ramblings, at http://www.tonyzirkle.com/CAMPAIGN/.

(In case you're curious, he does mix it up with some of his critics on the message boards on his website. It's good for a few cheap laughs.)

May 6, 2008 Campaign Concession Statement

In the 2008 primary, I probably had more negative attacks directed my way than any other congressional candidate in the nation.  I invited it and deserved it.  I knew that I'd take a major hit this year, especially when the democrat presidential race nearly monopolized the press.

I didn't have a chance to explain why my positions, which surely appeared to be novel to much of the public, were correct and best for this nation. Additionally, the Republican non-leadership would not allow debates and dis-invited me to speak before voters. I couldn't get even one of my economic proposals substantially published to the public in the local media. I was shooting for 20%, and it looks like I'll get close to that.

However, with respect to the social issues, when it comes to who was most successful in placing their ideas on the public record, I can claim an incredible victory. I, myself, have been extremely pleased at how well my plan worked to get my message out for public consumption. I obtained national coverage from numerous Internet blogs, Fox National news, CNN, MSNBC and nationally syndicated radio talk shows. I've said from the beginning that my primary purpose was not to win, but to educate and inform. To that end, I can claim this campaign as a tremendous success.

I had to make a difficult decision with my tv commercials.  Do I invest all to try to correct the record on false statements said about my positions and misunderstandings about them and lose votes, or do I invest all trying to create a warm and fuzzy, meaningless sound bite image and gain votes.  Most choose the later.  I chose the former.

I engaged in an experiment to see if the Great Porn Dragon could withstand my onslaught of humor. He can, or perhaps, I'm just not as funny as I think I am. That's been my sister's position since I was a pre-teen.

In any event, may the force be with Luke. He's going to need it in 2008. I, however, am going to enjoy my summer.

Why we are called "The Fly Over" (0.00 / 0)
Here is a  slide show that ended up on the New York Times in an article about change and Kokomo.

http://www.nytimes.com/slidesh...
This is what the NY Times thinks of central Indiana, and we proved it to them with actions like this.

The problem is that there are many more folks around here that would vote for someone like Zirkle than there are sensible folks. The sad fact is that in recent news reports and on Politico, Kokomo was held up nationally as an example of Indiana as a whole.  We need to get that little weasel Mitch out of office and get Jill in and join the 21st Century. We have a lot of PR to do, I will guarantee that.

Tim Banter For IN House District 24 (0.00 / 0)
This just came up on my radar last week. This is another great chance to rid ourselves of Mitch Daniels and his cronies. Tim is running against Rich McClain, who is a yes man for Mitch.
Lets stop the Mitch and Rich show, and elect a Democrat to district 24.

Here is the Pharos Tribune's account of Tim Banter's campaign start.
