Who's suing Bilerico now? The play along at home edition!

by: bilerico

Fri May 02, 2008 at 14:26:34 PM EDT

[UPDATED] David Orentlicher's campaign quickly responded to the Myers campaign's threatened legal action with their own press release.  Just as I did, they tell Myers to go take a hike.  Complete press release after the jump.

So now the Woody Myers for Congress campaign wants to sue me, the David Orentlicher campaign and American Values Alliance blogger Sheila Kennedy.  Welcome to the club, Sheila!

No word yet about Blue Indiana or Tyrion himself.  Keep trying guys, they're handing threats out like candy now; you'll get one soon!

I have now been advised by counsel for Dr. Meyers that the Doctor considers my original post "libelous," and that failure to correct the record will be grounds for an immediate lawsuit.

bilerico :: Who's suing Bilerico now? The play along at home edition!

The Orentlicher campaign made the following response to Woody Myers threatened lawsuit today.

"We stand by our ad.  It is true and accurate.  Stations will keep the ad up.  This political stunt is designed to distract from the real issue in this race--the extraordinary influence of special interests on the other candidates," Orentlicher spokesman Chad Chitwood stated.

The facts are:

Andre Carson has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from special interests, including the insurance companies, bankers and defense contractors that are blocking progress in this country.

Woody Myers sold out the public when Democrats in Congress were trying to protect patients and doctors from insurance companies that were putting profits over patient welfare.  Myers testified before Congress not once but twice in 1999 on behalf of insurance companies, HMOs and large corporations against the Democratic version of the Patients Bill of Rights. Specifically, he maintained that insurance companies and HMOs, not doctors and patients, should be allowed to decide what treatments are medically necessary.  Testimony like this helped the Republican majority in Congress succeed in killing the Patients' Bill of Rights that year.

We can understand why Woody Myers would like to keep his record hidden but the fact remains: when he could have made a real difference, Woody Myers sided with the insurance companies and HMOs against Indiana families and their doctors.

David Orentlicher lives on the North side of Indianapolis with wife Judy and children Cy (7) and Shayna (4) and he has represented the 86th district since 2002.

...how quiet you are on this Wilson.  You're always the first to comment on anything about IN-07.

OK...I'll speak (for myself only) (4.00 / 3)
I think what Myers is doing is plain stupid and politically ignorant. But who am I to tell the eminent physician what to do with his millions?

It's tarnishing his image as a "good guy" by getting down in the mud with Orentlicher and all his negative TV spots. It just brings more attention to the Orentlicher claims.

Sensible voters won't want to send either of those squabblers to Congress -- we already have a fine Democratic Congressman, André Carson!

Libel! Libel! (4.00 / 1)
Libel?  For accurate information accompanied by political opinionating on a blog post??

Where are we, Britain?!

Woody is nervous (0.00 / 0)
I would be "bitter" too if I had put $1.7 million dollars in my campaign and was losing.  Perhaps he should have run for Congress in the state where he lives.

Wow. (0.00 / 0)
This is not "helpful". Who sits around discussing actions like this anyway?

Where's Joh Padgett? (0.00 / 0)
Have the "suits" told him to shut up and lay low?

Ooops! Maybe I'll get sued for calling some muckety-muck a "suit"?

Dr. Myers's bad legal advice (0.00 / 0)
OK, I think this is really stupid of Dr. Myers, too...but....

in all fairness....

Isn't Bil retained for some kind of work for the Orentlicher campaign?  If so, when he posts:

"...David Orentlicher's campaign quickly responded to the Myers campaign's threatened legal action with their own press release.  Just as I did, they tell Myers to go take a hike."

Sit back and let 'em whine, Bil.  It just makes 'em look stupid.  Crowing about it isn't a real good idea if you're getting a check from DO.

You win this argument on all points, except, maybe, gloating....which can turn on ya real fast.

The Bilerico and AVA blogs have been remarkable fair and even-handed regarding this race.  It's almost over, and Woody wants to sue for libel now?  Doesn't it have to be untrue and doesn't he have to suffer proven (financial) damage to win anything like that?

Good luck Bil (4.00 / 1)
You do a great job at Bilerico and Bilerico-Indiana. I've never known anyone with a deeper commitment to our community. Keep your head up and keep up the good.

oops (0.00 / 0)
"good work", I meant.
