My petty, self-indulgent blog post of the week

by: Thomas

Thu Apr 10, 2008 at 21:54:09 PM EDT

Now, I wouldn't say that Gary Welsh is crazy. I certainly wouldn't say that he comes across bipolar on occasion. I definitely wouldn't say that he's been known to stretch the truth well past the breaking point into "liar" territory. No, it would be really inappropriate of me to state that during election season he's been known to go over the edge and lose it. And of all things, I would never condone insinuations as to the fact that Gary left his brain in Charleston.

Of course I wouldn't.

But some people do, and rather than take his lumps like the rest of the blogosphere -- it's what we spend most of our time doing on these things, after all -- the guy appears to have a two-prong response to these situations:

    1. He writes you an incoherent, obscenity-laced email berating you for having the audacity to disagree with him.

    2. He threatens to sue.
I've been on the receiving end of the former, but the latter has always been for those luckier than yours truly. You know, people like Bil Browning of The Bilerico Project and our very own Tyrion, who appears to have run afoul of the famed Advance Indiana blogger.

Bil's response is priceless:

If you don't want to be called racist, then stop attacking black politicians almost exclusively.  If you don't want to be called xenophobic, stop insinuating a political candidate's religion makes him a terrorist.  If you don't want to be held up as an example of half-baked conspiracy theories spurred on by a massive ego and diva tendencies, simply stop writing for everyone to notice.

Perhaps a little bit of investigation - or even a pleasant e-mail - would have helped your appeal to me.  There's an old saying that you'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar, but this whole things reeks of bullshit already so I'll just lay my cards on the table.

The whole thing is great, so why not indulge yourself in some blogorific fun? And be sure to leave Bil a comment thanking him for standing up to some pathetic bullying.

Understatement of the Year: (0.00 / 0)
Gary Welsh doesn't take criticism well.

Gary Welsh Derangement Syndrome (0.00 / 0)
GWDS runs in election cycles. The symptoms start showing around 2 months before an election. Gary starts bashing wildly and mercilessly the opponents of his favored candidate(s). Commenters start refuting his increasingly hysterical claims. Welsh then starts bashing those commenters. Folk protest so then Gary switches his blog into moderated mode to prevent anybody from saying anything unfavorable about himself or his chosen candidate(s). This goes on for a couple of weeks until Election Day and his candidate(s) lose.

Gary sits and cries in his beer. The salty beer severely disrupts his body's electrolyte balance which shocks his brain back into normalcy. This lucid phase persists until the next election approaches and the Gary Welsh Derangement Syndrome returns...

His current gay crack whore jihad against Barack Obama is signaling maybe an early onset of GWDS this year already. Sad, very sad.

As much as I hate agreeing.. (0.00 / 0)
with Wilson, on this one issue, he's spot on.  And now it's even harder to comment on Gary's blog, so I'll have to post over here.

Sad, there was a day when he was relevant.  Now he's like a circus freak show.

Gary Welsh's post (0.00 / 0)
I'm a little lost, but I think I get it: Tyrion (whomever (s)he is) has made multiple personal/hateful statements against Welsh.  On Bilerico or elsewhere.

Frankly, the name-calling on many blogs is out of control and uncivil.  If I owned a blog (no, thanks), all such crap would be deleted.

That's what likely got Welsh ticked off.  I don't blame him.  Whatever Tyrion, I or you feel about any blog posts, we shouldn't resort to name-calling.  Particularly when those insults get into personal stuff--I have no idea if Gary Welsh is bipolar, mentally ill or completely healthy. Nor do I care.

I find his blog postings intellegent and good-natured much of the time.  I disagree about one-third of the time, but, hey, who wants to be surrounded only by those with whom you agree?  I've directly confronted him on some posts, and when we disagree, he listens, and offers constructive criticism of my views, and vice-versa.  It's always a civil dialogue.

Can't we all just get along, even when we disagree?

In that vein--no thanks, I will not e-mail Bilerico and tell them "attaboy" for telling anyone to eff off.  Childish.  If you think it makes for cute writing or reading, well, then my confidence in Blue's judgment is misplaced.

None of this escalates to higher levels, if we agree to civilly disagree issue-to-issue.  And omit all personal observations and insults.

It's so, well, Dick Cheney-ish.  That oughta infuriate Bil.

I don't really want to make a big deal about this (0.00 / 0)
but I haven't written anything "hateful" to Gary.  I also didn't call him bi-polar.  I said his writings have a "faintly bi-polar quality," by which I meant  -- as I explained in the post -- he sours on people/issues very quickly with little explanation.

Nothing I wrote for any of the posts on Bilerico mentions Gary in any way.

civil dialogue? (0.00 / 0)
have you ever read a comment thread at gary's blog?  try this one.

the comments at gary's blog are among the worst of any blog in the state—even when moderation is on.

"Carson is a terrorist and a traitor" (0.00 / 0)
This is the kind of "civil dialogue" Gary Welsh permits even when in a moderated mode which means he explicitly and recklessly approved in advance the posting of such obviously libelous material.

Hi Gary! (0.00 / 0)
Gary Welsh is the only one who could think his posts are intelligent and good-natured.  I mean really, are we reading the same blog?

I really don't get it.  For what  purpose was this blog and others, made to do? Fight taxes and get politics back into line of the taxpayers.  I have not only seen this this happen in many different groups other then these blogs. When we get sidetracked with bickering among ourselves, our main cause will sure fail.

Being a fellow blogger, with a small readership, I try to stay on subjects of local politics and avoid situation like this. Anyone who reads my blog knows who I am and how to get in contact with me.

Fellows. Stop the bickering and stay on subject.

Bickering is what blogs do. (4.00 / 1)
Threatening to sue people because they disagree with you is what children do.

Well, it's what they would do if they could get their hands on a JD.

And for the record -- Gary writes untrue things about me all the time, and I've never thought to sue the guy. It's the internet -- he shouldn't take this stuff so seriously.
