Woody Myers donates additional $256k to own campaign

by: Thomas

Tue Apr 08, 2008 at 08:59:31 AM EDT

Oh, WTHR... They finally get around to covering the Woody Myers self-funding story, and they already are out of date. If you remember correctly, Dr. Myers donated $550,000 to his own campaign, triggering the "Millionaires' Amendment" and opening the door to higher donation limits in the 7th District Democratic primary.

Well, they finally had a blurb about it on their newscast last night, but what they failed to mention was that Myers has actually donated an additional $256,000 to his campaign, bringing the total self-fund number up to a whopping $806,000.

That's big money, folks, and will likely allow the Myers campaign to continue their television barrage uninterrupted. Will that be enough to take on the Carson ground game and the other two challengers? Who knows, but friend-of-the-site Abdul thinks that Woody has some momentum. Whether Dr. Myers can continue to self-fund without money becoming an issue in the race is yet to be determined.

Whatever happened to Orentlicher?

Or how about Carson? (0.00 / 0)
No ads, no signs (other than the ones left behind after the Special).  One might think he and his minions are asleep at the wheel.

a new TV spot (4.00 / 1)
is running for our Democratic Congressman André Carson - zillions more yardsigns are arriving! His 2 campaign offices are buzzing with staffers and volunteers...

Meanwhile our Democratic Congressman André Carson spends weekdays serving his constituents in Washington DC. Good government is always good politics!

Abdul,
~~~~~
I just saw this report on the WTHR website at:
Woody Seeks To Buy Win
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It looks like Myers is trying to buy the race. He has already spent $550,000 om his own campaign. The good news is that now it looks like other candidates can get supporters to donate about the normal $2,300 limit!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It looks like the choices are the Muslim, the Millionaire or
If you even for a moment think that's from the Mays campaign, you are a true dumbass.
has been all over the blogs flacking for Carolene Mays for a couple of weeks now. It's definitely a part of her campaign operation!
[ Parent ]
who? (0.00 / 0)
This person does not represent the Mays campaign, but it does expose the type of people who are using her name as a way to throw out scare tactics.
Vote for the person, not the party.
In it to win it (0.00 / 0)
Dr. Myers is in this race to win it, he truly is putting his money where his mouth is. And Wilson raises a good question, where is David O? Even Carolene Mays is on the radio at this point, and I have yet to see or hear reports of any David O yard signs around town.
He's got yard signs up in my neighborhood and surrounding area.  They're pretty giagntic, but they have to be with that last name lol
I'm curious, are you in David O's House district by chance?
Not in David O's District (0.00 / 0)
I live in Greg Porter's house district, and the Orentlicher signs started sprouting up two days ago.  I've only seen a few so far--Mays is everywhere.
I'm currently torn, Joh (4.00 / 1)
I've made financial committments to David Orentlicher already and genuinely think he's the best one for the job.  But I just don't think he can beat Carson.  Myers might be able to.
Hoosier Progressive
[ Parent ]
Nothing wrong with that (0.00 / 0)
I too was torn between them before I committed to Dr. Myers. I simply think Dr. Myers has the resources, the intelligence and the ability to connect with people better than David O can. Dr. Myers will make a greater Congressman than Andre Carson.
On that we agree. (0.00 / 0)
Either David or Woody would make a better Congressman.
Ditto that. (0.00 / 0)
Although I think Woody is far and away the best candidate, I would fully support David O. if he gets the nod. Mays too, they all have the experience to represent us well. However, I will vote for Elrod, if we get stuck with Carson... which I fear we will.
[ Parent ]
Elrod over Carson? (0.00 / 0)
I hope you don't consider yourself a Democrat.
ELLSWORTH FOR SENATE 2010
[ Parent ]
Sorry to disappoint but... (0.00 / 0)
I am indeed a Democrat, just not a knee-jerk one. I believe most people don't vote straight tickets, whether they are Repubs or Dems. Think Evan Bayh or  Dick Lugar. I try vote for whoever I see as the better candidate. I think most people do.
Based on your remarks, I take it that you think anyone who doesn't vote 100% Democrat, isn't a Democrat. Is that right?
[ Parent ]
I once had the same opinion you did. (4.00 / 1)
Then I saw Jon Elrod talk.  He's anti-choice, supports Social Security privatization, and worst of all would support the Republican leadership.
My suggestion if you're really disgusted by Carson is to just skip that ballot line.
Hoosier Progressive
[ Parent ]
I can respect your view. (0.00 / 0)
But I see a "no vote" as a vote for Carson. You can call it a protest vote (which technically it is).
If Elrod were cut from the same cloth as Eric Miller and his ilk, I certainly would be voting for Carson. But he's not. Yes, I am aware Elrod is Pro Life but at least his Social Security privitization is limited to the under 30 crowd. He seems like a decent guy, and I like the fact he doesn't necessarily toe the party line (ex. the marriage amendment).
I can only hope Dems will fix this situation in May.
[ Parent ]
Shame on you (0.00 / 0)
Anyone that would vote for someone who wants to privatize Social Security, continue George Bush's disasterous Iraq policies and advance John Boehner's right-wing agenda is, at the very least, not a very good Democrat.  Or maybe a Democrat who just doesn't understand how Congress works.
ELLSWORTH FOR SENATE 2010
[ Parent ]
Shame on ME? (0.00 / 0)
Are you kidding me? Sounds like you're saying that any Democrat who would vote for any Republican is a "bad" Democrat. Is that right? Or do you take the fact that I'd rather vote for a Republican than for your candidate as a personal insult? Either way, I find it naive and amusing. You seem very young.
FYI, I probably know more about how Congress "works" than you do, kid.
[ Parent ]
Democrats (0.00 / 0)
who vote for Republicans would seem to be, by definition, bad Democrats.  If you don't want people to question your Democratic bona fides, don't advocate for Republicans.
[ Parent ]
My mistake. (4.00 / 1)
So your and Mario's definition of "good" is "doctrinaire". Aaahhhh. So basically, what you're saying is that you would vote for, for example, the ethically challenged Monroe Gray over any Republican, no matter how squeekly clean he is. Is that right? Personally, I will not vote for a Democrat I know is corrupt, incompetent or, in the case of Carson, a candidate whose only qualification is his last name.
I will now confess that I am indeed a "bad" Democrat and frankly I am proud to be one!
Yard Signs (0.00 / 0)
The only yard signs I have seen from Woody and Carolyn are in the public right of way which is illegeal.  May have seen 3 signs in individual private yards.  Vacant lots not included.  Leads me to wonder where their support is or is it all superficial?
[ Parent ]
Downtown (0.00 / 0)
Myers signs are everywhere, but not many in private yards.  Mays recently blanketed several businesses (McDonald's) with signs, but again, haven't seen many in actual yards.  To me, so far, the majority of the signs seem to be put up by the campaigns.
And I thought it was perfectly legal to put yard signs at intersections?
ELLSWORTH FOR SENATE 2010
[ Parent ]
yard signs (0.00 / 0)
I stand corrected on the public right of way sign law.  Marion County law does prohibit any temporary signs in the public right of way.  However, state law allows election signs in the public right of way and trumps the local law.  I still stand by my implication that all signage by Woody and Carolyn seems to be campaign originated and not constituent oriented.
[ Parent ]
Does anyone know... (0.00 / 0)
How much is Myers worth?  And how did he make his money?  I'm not all that familiar with his biography.
ELLSWORTH FOR SENATE 2010
no woody for me (0.00 / 0)
Woody is a fraud and he is trying to build an appearance of support by plastering his yards on public right of ways,  vacant houses and in front of fast food places.
(1) He lives in a 2.1 million dollar condo and pays no property taxes.
(2)  He hasn't lived in Indiana for 15 to 20 years.
(3)  He is really a republican and just recently switched.
(4) He is homophobic.
(5) He supported forcing doctors to make patients private medical records public.
(6)  He favored quaranting anyone who is HIV positive.
The 7th district deserves better and can do better.
He was a Republican? (0.00 / 0)
Uhhhh... (4.00 / 1)
While Woody is not my candidate, I think it's wrong to say without evidence either (a) he is a republican or (b) he's homophobic.  If you have evidence for either of those claims, please provide it, but otherwise this is crap.
That said, I would like to hear him explain why he advocated a quarantine for PWIs and what his current stances on LGBT issues are.
[ Parent ]
NYC AIDS activists (0.00 / 0)
despised Myers! He might have changed by now. Strangely, he's been quite silent on LGBT issues, hasn't he now?
Who know about his voting record? He hasn't voted in Marion County since voting records are retained (back to 1991). He only registered to vote here just last year. Carpetbagging to the max!
He was nevertheless appointed by a Republican Governor to be Indiana Health Commissioner many years ago.
[ Parent ]
Hey Wilson (0.00 / 0)
Let's try to be precise with our language.  Being despised by AIDS activists doesn't necessarily make one a homophobe.
That said, advocating an AIDS quarantine is just appalling and reflects terrible judgment.
[ Parent ]
Despised (0.00 / 0)
That's just one reason AIDS activists in NYC despised Myers!
[ Parent ]
Are we talking (0.00 / 0)
about his opinion about quarantine now, or his opinion 20+ years ago? There is a distinction.
Wilson, surely you remember the hysteria surrounding AIDS early on? If this was his opinion way back when, picking on him about it isn't being fair. If it's opinion today, then that is a horse of a different color.
[ Parent ]
Yo Varangian (0.00 / 0)
I would be jaw-droppingly shocked if that were his opinion today.  It would be so mind-bogglingly off-base and discredited there would be no way he could survive the primary once it was publicized.  But he doesn't get a free-pass if those were only his opinions in the 80s.  Medical professionals are responsible for drafting humane and calm policies--not whipping up further hysteria by advocating quarantines--the overwhelming majority of medical professionals in the 1980s never advocated an AIDS quarantine, largely because it was unnecessary, would be counterproductive in a number of ways, would be a gross violation of patient's medical and constitutional rights, and, finally, tended to feed the worst sort of attitudes and behaviors towards PWAs.   That's all a way of saying it was a hysterical overreaction.  All doctors, and particularly doctors drafting policy, should be fighting hysteria, not feeding it.
I've gone back and looked at the reporting on the issue in 1990 in the NYT and it doesn't really present the opinions of his critics clearly or indicate when he stopped advocating for a quarantine.   Some clarification from Dr. Myers would go along way here: Did he advocate an AIDS quarantine?  Why did he?  When did he stop?
Until I get answers on those fronts, I have to admit, this really sours me on his candidacy.
For context (0.00 / 0)
Read these articles on the proposed 1986 California AIDS quarantine by the LATimes:
http://www.aegis.com/news/lt/1...
http://www.aegis.com/news/lt/1...
Now, really, which side sounds calm and reasonable here?  AIDS quarantines were hysterical, unscientific responses then as they are now.
He was on the same side as Lyndon LaRouche, for god's sake.  Yeesh.
