Barack Obama's first Indiana television ad

by: Thomas

Thu Mar 27, 2008 at 14:29:55 PM EDT

This is scheduled to start running tomorrow. No word yet on how significant the ad buy was, but the campaign is describing it as a a "statewide" purchase. What do you think?

That was the message I was glad to see on the TV screens!!!

Not bad (4.00 / 2)
Speaks directly to the NAFTA trouble Hillary is going to have a tough time explaining. She was allegedly against NAFTA before she was for it and is now against it again. Smart ad.

And I agree with Wilson (!), it was great to see that reminder for people to register to vote by April 7th.

Obama really does bring us all together.

But let's keep hammering just Hillary because it's easier to be ignorant.  Even though there's plenty to indicate Hillary has been telling the truth: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

They're both basically in the same boat, but somehow it's Hillary that gets hammered.

ELLSWORTH FOR SENATE 2010

She is catching heat (0.00 / 0)
because she made a big show of saying "Shame on you, Barack!" for saying things that turn out to be true. Back in February when that blog post you linked to was created Clinton still hadn't released her White House documents.

Sorry to say (0.00 / 0)
My opinion that she was privately against NAFTA and publicly for it out of political necessity hasn't changed.  Additionally, my opinion that Obama most likely considers NAFTA a net-positive but feels the need to downplay that sentiment in the states that have been hurt, also remains unchanged.

That's not my point actually. (4.00 / 1)
I wouldn't try to dissuade you of your opinion on what her private thoughts were. For my part, I am happy to say "I don't know." and leave it at that.

What I AM saying is that despite whatever words she employs today to explain herself the facts are quite clear that she took action to support NAFTA back when it mattered to ensure its passage. Honestly, THAT doesn't bother me either since I am largely agnostic on whether NAFTA is bad or good. What I am saying -- and Obama is completely justified in pointing it out -- is that Clinton wants to claim experience and credit for the Clinton years. That's all fine and well, but she has to take the good with the bad.

That is a simple, straightforward proposition.

If she wants to talk about how she is a fighter and gets things done, well, this is one of the things she fought for (despite any private misgivings she had). It's perfectly fair to point that out to voters and let them decide for themselves if that's something they want to support.

Fair enough (0.00 / 0)
He pointed this out in Ohio, and he still lost in a rout.  It's not going to work in Indiana either.  Maybe he should try a new tact: instead of disingenuously telling voters he'll overhaul NAFTA, he could give us some specifics on how he'd help those hurt by it.

In Ohio... (4.00 / 1)
The whole Obama Canadian flap was happening.  Now that that's been disproven, he won't have to be on the defensive so much.

Additionally, these records showing Hillary's schedule hadn't been released in time for the Ohio primary.  This is relatively new information and could play against Hillary in Indiana.

Simple (4.00 / 1)
I really liked the simplicity of the ad - no music, just a straightforward message. Regardless of the underlying content, I think this has potential to cut through and be heard.

Plus, how long has it been since a Presidential candidate targeted Indiana in an ad? My guess is he'll get plenty of attention from earned media for this produced piece.

HRC & NAFTA (0.00 / 0)
Don't let "Mario Cuomo" fool you with those very dated links.  Here's the truth about HRC's role as First Lady re: NAFTA:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
And, I believe even David Gergen's testimony was that, yes, she had private reservations, but they were only that she wanted to do health care reform first & just feared NAFTA would suck up all the political oxygen.  Either way, she absolutely did lobby for NAFTA in her role as First Lady, which I think was only appropriate, quite honestly.  But I think the last thing her campaign needs right now is the propogation of more blatant falsehoods.
And, as an aside, I live in Buffalo, NY.  Ask me how much my Senator has done for this city on her watch these past 8 years?  Here's a hint - We fell to the rank of 2nd Poorest City in America last year.

Oh, and BTW... (0.00 / 0)
Here's more truth about who was really whispering to Canada prior to the Ohio primary:

Hillary and Nafta (0.00 / 0)
Either Hillary wanted Nafta and she's lying to us now, or she didn't want Nafta and she lied to us back then when she supported it.

Either way, she lied.

In a sense, you're right -- (4.00 / 1)
At the end of the day, though, I think the NAFTA debate is slightly overblown. I find it hard to believe that there aren't quite a few politicos from that period of time who supported NAFTA, but would work tirelessly to rework (or scrap) the agreement in hindsight.

I'm not saying she doesn't owe some sort of explanation, but I also don't think that we should play the Kerry card and say she doesn't have a right to change her mind. She just needs to be honest about it.
