Gary gets it wrong (again)

by: Thomas

Thu Feb 14, 2008 at 17:14:12 PM EST

The voice of infinite wisdom speaks:
Today's story in today's Star by Mary Beth Schneider tells you that the video tape recording was made by a Democratic partisan staffer from a balcony in the Indiana House of Representatives' chamber. What it doesn't tell you is that the balcony from where the video taping took place is an area restricted from use by the general public. Access to the south mezzanine balcony is limited to lawmakers, special guests and staff granted permission by the Indiana House Democrats and members of the news media. A guard stands outside the door on the fourth floor leading to this balcony while the legislature is in session. This suggests that either a member of the House Democratic staff or a Democratic lawmaker had to provide access to the political staffer.
I'm not going to waste much time going through this, but I talked to two different media outlets today who both confirmed that they went to the public balcony and took the same shot that the footage shows. Gary's not just wrong, he's long-winded in his wrongness.

Plus, the House communication staff member who is usually in the south balcony is Jeff Fites, and the guy is the best public employee I've ever met in terms of avoiding even the illusion of impropriety. He would never have allowed a political staffer in that area. Ever.

Desperation ain't pretty folks, especially when it's wasted on a relatively small story like this.

Update: WRTV peddles this same nonsense on their coverage of the story. Sounds like Brian Bosma and Gary Welsh are both in the same part of crazytown on this one.

Update II: More classic stuff from the world of tin-foil hats.

On a day when the Carson campaign was using a reliable Star reporter to do a hit piece on Carson's special election opponent, State Rep. Jon Elrod, based upon a surrepticious videotaping of Elrod by a long-time Carson dirty tricks operative, taxpayer-paid Carson congressional employees were busy logging into this blog site, representing 2% of the nearly 2,000 hits this site has received already today.
Baseless conjecture and a self-gratifying assurance of his own site's importance? That's nirvana man, nirvana.

Who did you talk to? (4.00 / 1)
Who are the media outlets?

Let's see the footage they shot.

Yeah (4.00 / 1)
I wonder if they zoomed in on a legislator's personal correspondence as well.

I'm watching the news now... (4.00 / 2)
...but you can call them and ask yourself, if you want. They said it was taken at the far-right front corner of the public balcony.

This is a lame diversionary tactic. I know Jeff Fites well, and there is no way in hell he would ever allow something like that on his watch.

[ Parent ]
It's just weird, dude. (4.00 / 1)
When I do journalisting on my blog, I name names.

Weird.  Just like Wilson buying that website for Andre.  Still don't understand that one.

[ Parent ]
Just send Mary Beth Schneider... (4.00 / 2)
...an email if you don't believe me.

Or anyone else reporting on this story. It's not hard to fact-check this stuff. If only Gary wasn't so caught up in his conspiracy theories, he could probably do the same.

websites (0.00 / 0)
In 1996 I did Julia Carson's campaign website - she was the first successful African-American candidate to have one. Later I did her official Congressional site. I also set up the Center Township site for Trustee Carl Drummer.

In other words, I'm known to be fairly savvy about websites. André's long been interested in public service - he knew a personal website could be useful. He asked me to register the name (if only to keep it out of hostile hands) - I did so and slapped up a couple of photos as a placeholder.

I don't know Thomas. (0.00 / 0)
Jeff is one of Hillary Clinton's political operatives in the state.  Just sayin.

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
He's impeccable on this stuff. (4.00 / 1)
Just trust me.

[ Parent ]
I do. (0.00 / 0)
For some strange reason, I trust you more than anyone else here.

Jeff was my county chair... (4.00 / 1)
...during high school, and if I learned one thing about him while interning at the House, it is that he is super-careful about ethical issues. More so than anyone else I've ever met, to be completely honest.

Me Too (0.00 / 0)
I care a lot about ethics in politics.

Unless it's Jon Elrod breaching them on the House floor, right?

Wilson is on a zero-rating binge again.

I can't let him troll out all of your comments... (4.00 / 2)
...because then I wouldn't have any fighting to watch.

poor Gary Welsh (4.00 / 1)
He is so paranoid about me - I didn't do the taping. I wish I had - I first learned about it in the Star and I smiled broadly. Whoever did it: GOOD WORK!

house.gov (0.00 / 0)
There are literally thousands of PCs at house.gov but poor Gary just assumes all the 40 hits came from the 7th CD computers. I'm sure many hits were from Republican offices checking out just how lousy a candidate Elrod in Indianapolis really is...

I don't know about that... (0.00 / 0)
...or really care about it.

I will say that The Hill has a blurb about the Elrod story now. He may never get to Washington, but his reputation will precede him should he make that journey.

[ Parent ]
A blurb where at on The Hill? (0.00 / 0)
I did a search for Elrod, and only three old stories came up...

Last paragraph (0.00 / 0)
I loved the closing paragraph:

Elrod is running against Indianapolis City-County Councilman Andre Carson in the March 11 special election. Carson, the grandson of the late congresswoman, is a heavy favorite.

[ Parent ]
Exactly. (0.00 / 0)
Nobody here thinks Elrod is actually going to win or even do well.  The DCCC is wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars here that could be used to pick up Republican seats across the country.  Why is that?

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
Oh that's right. (0.00 / 0)
They're doing it to help him against other Democrats.  Insiders protecting their own.  DCCC will not get another dime from me.

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
Another dime? (0.00 / 0)
I doubt if they will miss it - frankly, I doubt if you ever gave a penny to the DCCC.

[ Parent ]
I don't care what you doubt. (0.00 / 0)
I have donated and raised a significant amount of money for Democratic candidates for a 25 year old.  I've donated to many Congressional and Senate candidates as well as two presidential candidates this round.  In 2006 I donated to the DCCC as part of the Red to Blue program.

two candidates (0.00 / 0)
You provide proof with solely 2 candidates -- all the rest is hypothetical anonymous boasting...

[ Parent ]
Two candidates for the 2008 cycle. (0.00 / 0)
But again, I'm not debating my Democratic bona fides to you or anyone else.  But dismiss what I'm doing all you want.  After all, you're the real Democratic hero.  We should all model ourselves after you.

Hoosier Progressive

[ Parent ]
Great! (0.00 / 0)
The first thing you need to learn, grasshopper: Eschew voting for Republicans and eschew advocating election of Republicans.

Blather all you wish about your purported bona fides but no Democrat ever openly and unashamedly advocates the election of a Republican. Advocating the election of a Bushzoid Republican over a progressive African-American Democrat is especially heinous...

[ Parent ]
tsk, tsk (0.00 / 0)
Wilson, why did you have to append "African-American" to your "progressive Democrat" phrase? It was unnecessary and mildly racist.

Plus, is a litmus test now required for Democrats, just like it has become important to conservative Republicans? That would be disappointing.
