Andre Carson, grandson of the late U.S. Rep. Julia Carson, D-Ind., said Sunday he is seriously considering running for her congressional seat, but will wait until after the New Year arrives to announce his decision.
"For me, it's about how can I represent and show my love for and represent people across racial, religious and social lines," said Carson, a Democratic member of the City-County Council.
A caucus of Democratic precinct committee members is scheduled to select a nominee Jan. 12 to fill her 7th congressional district seat, which covers most of Indianapolis. A Republican Party decision on its caucus has not been announced.
A decision on a special-election date for district voters to select a replacement to complete the congresswoman's sixth term, which runs through 2008, is pending by Gov. Mitch Daniels.
With the Indiana Democratic Party announcing that they will begin accepting candidates for the special election on January 2, I would expect we will know where the race stands by the end of this week.
