Abdul has a post up discussing some comments that Rep. Steve Buyer apparently made at last week's Midwest Republican Leadership Conference. As with most times that Rep. Buyer opens his mouth, that charm and class of his just shined right through:
In an interview prior to his speech at last weekend's Midwest Republican Leadership Conference, Buyer said the Senators to need wait for an anticipated report from General David Petraeus to Congress before commenting.
"The senators need to be patient and close their mouths and listen before they speak out about Iraq," he said. "They need to stop trying to be generals on the ground. Your job is to listen to the generals."
Yeah, because we've only given this administration over four years of quiet resolve on the direction of this war, and that just isn't enough!
Steve Buyer is so frighteningly out of touch with the values of his district (and America in general) that I can't help but cringe every time he gets in front of a microphone and pretends he somehow is the voice of reason in this discussion. What sort of reasonable voice thinks that nuclear strikes are a good idea? What about fighting to keep money away from our veterans?
And furthermore, I can't help but find it offensive that Steve Buyer is going to pretend that his service as a lawyer during the first Gulf War, while respectable, somehow makes him more qualified than one of the most respected foreign relations statesmen of the last fifty years. It's arrogance and it's troubling because there are a good number of folks who have convinced themselves that Buyer is a great candidate for a possible successor to Lugar. Personally, I think Steve Buyer is an excellent candidate for early retirement.
You can read about his possible challenger in the fourth district here.
